Previously in this course, we covered Introduction to Keyword Research to identify your audience and Evaluating Keyword Competition to choose your target focus. Now that you have a direction, it’s time to build the bridge between your website and Google’s search algorithms.

Google Search Console (GSC) is the primary diagnostic tool for SEO health. It is the only place where you receive direct communication from Google regarding your site’s visibility, indexing status, and manual actions. Without this setup, you are essentially flying blind.

Verify Domain Ownership in Google Search Console

Before Google shares data about your site, you must prove you are the owner. GSC provides two main ways to do this: a Domain property (recommended) or a URL-prefix property.

The Domain Property (Recommended)

This covers your entire domain, including all subdomains (like blog.example.com) and both HTTP and HTTPS versions.

  1. Log in to Google Search Console.
  2. Click the property selector dropdown in the top left and select Add property.
  3. Choose Domain on the right side and enter your root domain (e.g., yourprojectsite.com).
  4. Google will provide a TXT record. Copy this and add it as a new DNS record in your domain registrar’s dashboard (e.g., Namecheap, GoDaddy, or Cloudflare).
  5. Click Verify.

The URL-Prefix Property

If you cannot access your DNS settings, use the URL-prefix method. This tracks only a specific protocol (e.g., https://yourprojectsite.com). You can verify this by uploading an HTML file to your server or using an HTML tag in your site's <head> section.

Navigating the GSC Dashboard

Once verified, you’ll see the main interface. Don't be intimidated by the options; focus on these core pillars:

  • Performance: This is your command center. It shows clicks, impressions, average CTR (Click-Through Rate), and average position. As of July 2026, you can also see data for social and video platform properties if you connect your Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube accounts.
  • Indexing: Use the "Pages" report to see which URLs Google has indexed and, more importantly, why some might be excluded (e.g., "Not found 404" or "Crawled - currently not indexed").
  • Experience: This section monitors your site's Core Web Vitals and mobile usability.
  • Security & Manual Actions: If you ever receive a penalty, it will appear here.

Interpreting the Initial Health Report

When you first log in, the data may be blank if your site is brand new. Give it 24–48 hours to collect data. Once populated, check the Pages report under the "Indexing" tab.

If you see "Not indexed" pages, don't panic. Click the reason provided. If Google says "Discovered - currently not indexed," it means the crawler found your page but hasn't visited it yet due to crawl budget optimization priorities. If you see "Page with redirect," ensure those redirects are intentional.

Hands-on Exercise: The 10-Minute Setup

  1. Verify: Complete the DNS verification for your project site.
  2. Explore: Click on the "Performance" tab and set the date range to "Last 3 months" (even if it's empty, get familiar with the filters).
  3. Check Indexing: Navigate to the "Pages" report. Are there any errors listed? If your site is brand new, it is normal to see "Not found (404)" if you haven't published content yet.

Common Pitfalls

  • Verifying the wrong protocol: If you use the URL-prefix method, ensure you verify both the http and https versions, or you’ll only see half your data.
  • Ignoring "Excluded" pages: Not every page needs to be indexed (like your privacy policy or thank-you pages). Only worry if your core content pages are appearing in the excluded list.
  • Dashboard Overload: Avoid checking GSC every hour. SEO is a long-term game; check your performance reports weekly to spot trends rather than daily fluctuations.

Google Search Console is your most vital SEO tool. By verifying your domain, you gain access to the same data Google uses to evaluate your site’s quality and relevance. Remember that the "Pages" report is your first line of defense against technical issues that prevent your content from ranking.

Up next: We will generate an XML sitemap and submit it to Google to ensure every page you create is found and indexed efficiently.
